College Student Arrested for Extortion and Threats against Woman Professor in Pune

Pune, 24th June 2023: In a distressing incident, a 26-year-old college student named Mayank Singh, hailing from Patna, Bihar, has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to extort $5,000 (Rs 4 lakh) from a 36-year-old female professor. Mayank, who is enrolled at a prominent college in Loni Kalbhor, resorted to threatening the professor with the circulation of compromising photos on social media platforms. The victim wasted no time and promptly filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Hadapsar police station.

According to the police investigation, the student initially reached out to the professor by sending a friend request through a social media platform. However, what started as a seemingly innocent connection quickly turned sinister as Mayank started making threats. He warned the professor that if she failed to comply with his demands, he would publicly release her photos, thus subjecting her to potential defamation. Moreover, he had also recorded an audio tape involving the professor, further adding to the distress caused.

Operating under the pseudonym “Robin,” the accused persistently intimidated the professor. He even went so far as to send the audio recording to her husband and demanded a substantial payment of $5,000 as a condition for not publicizing the materials.

Fearful of the repercussions and deeply disturbed by the threats, the female professor decided to take immediate action by reporting the incident to the police. The case is now under investigation by Police Sub-Inspector Gandhale
