Yellow Alert: Thunderstorms Expected in Maharashtra, Pune Braces for Weather Turbulence

Maharashtra : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune and several districts in Maharashtra, cautioning residents about the imminent threat of thunderstorms coupled with lightning and gusty winds.

IMD’s Weather Advisory:

  • Yellow Alert: The IMD has raised a yellow alert for Pune and surrounding regions, indicating a heightened risk of thunderstorm activity over the next two days.
  • Weather Dynamics: The alert is attributed to a trough/wind discontinuity originating from a cyclonic circulation stretching from Marathwada to south Tamil Nadu. This weather phenomenon is expected to intensify thunderstorm activity in the affected areas.

Severity and Precautions:

  • Moderate Risk: While Pune is under a yellow alert, indicating moderate risk, the intensity of thunderstorms may exceed normal conditions but is not expected to escalate to the severity warranting an orange alert.
  • Preventive Measures: Residents are advised to take necessary precautions in light of the weather forecast. Precautionary measures include staying indoors during thunderstorms, avoiding shelter under trees, and remaining vigilant throughout the alert period.

Current Weather Conditions:

  • Cloudy Skies: Presently, Pune is experiencing cloudy weather conditions with temperatures soaring to 39°C.
  • Moisture Levels: Elevated moisture levels in the atmosphere create conducive conditions for the formation of thunderclouds, elevating the risk of localized instability and subsequent thunderstorm activity, particularly during the evening hours.

Extent of Alert:

  • Districts Affected: Apart from Pune, thunderstorm warnings have been extended to districts including Chandrapur, Kolhapur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Satara, Sangli, and Solapur, among others.

Forecast and Outlook:

  • IMD Bulletin: According to the latest IMD bulletin, isolated light rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning are anticipated over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada until April 22.
  • Regional Impact: Regions such as Konkan, Goa, and Vidarbha may also experience scattered rainfall and thunderstorms until April 21 and April 23, respectively.

Advisory to Residents:

  • Remain Cautious: Given the conducive atmospheric conditions for convective cloud development, residents are urged to exercise caution during the forecasted period.
  • Safety Measures: It is advised to avoid seeking shelter under trees during thunder and lightning events and to remain vigilant and prepared for any weather-related eventualities.

As Maharashtra braces for the onset of thunderstorms, authorities emphasize the importance of staying informed and adhering to safety guidelines to mitigate risks posed by inclement weather conditions. Stay tuned for further updates and advisories as the situation unfolds.
