Wings of Wonder: Pune’s Early Avian Guests Captivate Birdwatchers at Prime Spots

As the winter season unfolds, Pune has become a hotspot for birdwatching enthusiasts, as rare migratory birds make an early appearance at various picturesque locations. Birdwatchers armed with binoculars and a keen sense of observation are flocking to renowned spots like Kumbhargaon (Bhigwan), Sinhagad valley, Pabe ghat, and Tamhini ghat to witness the vibrant array of avian visitors.

Situated around 120 kilometers from Pune, Kumbhargaon has earned a reputation as a paradise for birdwatchers. The region is particularly known for hosting Greater Flamingos, who migrate from Gujarat and even parts of Africa. According to organizers conducting birdwatching boat tours at Kumbhargaon, this year has seen an early arrival of around 1,000 flamingos and other uncommon migratory species like the Greater Spotted Eagle and the Bar Headed Goose. The relatively lower water levels in Ujani Dam, attributed to lower rainfall this year, provide an ideal environment for the birds to find prey.

City day tour operators are experiencing a surge in reservations, especially during weekends, as bird enthusiasts eagerly plan their visits. Visitors are expressing delight at the unusual sight of numerous birds in December, with plans to visit before the spots become too crowded. For many, it’s a unique opportunity, as children excitedly witness flamingos for the first time.

Birdwatchers have reported sightings of a variety of migratory species, including the Peregrine Falcon, recognized as the world’s fastest bird, along with the Eurasian Wigeon and Small Pratincole.

The avian spectacle extends to Sinhagad valley, where enthusiasts can spot the Indian Paradise Flycatcher, Ultramarine Flycatcher, and Red-breasted Flycatcher. Around 40 kilometers outside the city, at Tamhini Ghat, birdwatching excursions are gaining popularity, featuring migratory birds like the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Blue-Capped Rock Thrush, and Indian Blue Robin.

As Pune transforms into a haven for birding activities this winter, nature lovers and photographers alike are reveling in the opportunity to witness the diverse and vibrant avian guests gracing the region.
