Weather Swings Spark Health Concerns: Increase in Fever and Shivers Among Pune Residents

The climate in Pune has recently become quite unpredictable, swinging between short drizzles, cloudy skies, and sudden bursts of sunshine. This erratic weather pattern has led to a significant rise in cases of fever and shivering among the city’s residents, according to local medical experts.

Medical professionals in Pune have noticed a surge in patients presenting with symptoms of fever, shivering, cold, and cough. The changing weather conditions are believed to be contributing to an increase in both vector-borne and water-borne diseases. Over the past month, there has been a notable increase in the number of patients seeking medical attention for symptoms such as fever, headache, cough, and shivering. Dr. Dattatreya Kadam, a practicing physician, noted, “The number of patients visiting my clinic has doubled. What used to be around 150-200 visits a day has now significantly increased, prompting me to extend my clinic hours from early mornings to late evenings.”

Dr. Sachin Gandhi stressed the importance of regular immunization for children, acknowledging that some youngsters might experience fever as a reaction to vaccines. He advised parents not to panic and to administer medicines according to medical guidance. Despite the recent rise in cases of fever, cold, and cough, most patients have been successfully treated in outpatient settings, with only a limited number requiring hospitalization.

Dr. Sagar Mane highlighted that certain demographics are more susceptible to these health issues, particularly children and individuals aged 15 to 24. He explained, “Children’s bodies are more sensitive to sudden weather changes, making them prone to illnesses. High fever followed by cough and cold, which are classic indicators of diseases like dengue, often affect them. Additionally, the outdoor activities of this age group expose them to mosquito bites and potential dengue infections.”

Several factors contribute to the increasing number of patients. The combination of sporadic rain and bright sunlight has created an environment conducive to the spread of viral infections. Stagnant water, a result of these weather fluctuations, has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. Contaminated water and food have also led to stomach-related issues.

To address the rising health concerns, medical experts recommend taking certain precautionary measures:

Consider getting vaccinated against the flu. Keep unwell children at home instead of sending them to school.

Stay well-hydrated by drinking sufficient water.

Consume fresh and nutritious foods.

Avoid self-medication and seek professional medical advice.

Given these evolving health challenges, residents of Pune are encouraged to stay vigilant and prioritize their well-being, especially during periods of unpredictable weather.
