Water Discharge from Panshet Dam Raised to 1,577 Cusecs Amidst Increasing Rainfall

Pune, August 26, 2023 – The irrigation department has announced a significant increase in the water discharge from the Panshet Dam and its associated power generation plant, effective today. The augmented discharge is a response to recent rainfall in the catchment area, which has consequently raised the water level within the dam.

As per official sources, the water discharge from the power generation plant has been elevated to a total of 1,577 cubic feet per second (Cusecs). This allocation comprises 600 Cusecs from the power generation plant and an additional 977 Cusecs from the dam, as of 6 pm on this day.

The decision to enhance the water discharge has been prompted by the Panshet Dam nearing its full capacity due to the recent precipitation in the catchment zone. Currently, the dam’s capacity stands at 100%. Officials have extended a word of caution to the residents living in proximity to the river, advising them to take necessary precautions. Further adjustments to the discharge rate will be contingent upon the amount of rainfall received in the catchment areas.

It’s important to note that the Panshet Dam boasts a total capacity of 10.65 thousand million cubic feet (TMC). Among the other three dams within the Khadakwasla cluster, there has been an observable escalation in water storage levels as well. According to official data, the Khadakwasla Dam is presently at 51.99% water storage capacity (1.03 TMC), the Warasgaon Dam at 97.07% (12.45 TMC), and the Temghar Dam at 76.77% (2.85 TMC) storage capacity. In aggregate, the total storage across all four dams is currently at 92.51% compared to the 100% reported on the corresponding date last year.
