Viman Nagar Citizens Forum Calls for Urgent Traffic Solutions to Combat Congestion Woes

Viman Nagar, a bustling locality in Pune, is grappling with escalating traffic congestion, prompting the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum, led by Convenor Qaneez Sukhrani, to voice their concerns and demand swift solutions. In a recent press release, the forum shed light on the challenges arising from the area’s burgeoning population and insufficient traffic management measures.

The press release underscores the collaborative efforts made by the forum to address the traffic issues. Proposed solutions have been communicated to Vijaykumar Magar, DCP Traffic, discussed with Rajkumar Shere, senior PI Planning, and site visits have been carried out alongside Idekar, Senior PI of the Vimantal Traffic Division.

The citizens’ forum emphasizes that the suggested solutions are not only citizen-friendly but also straightforward, indicating that they should have been implemented earlier by the Traffic Police to spare residents and commuters unnecessary inconveniences. The forum is committed to overseeing the execution of these solutions and ensuring that the Police take prompt actions to create a congestion-free environment along Viman Nagar and VIP Airport Road.

While the possibility of implementing one-way routes has been contemplated, the press release acknowledges the limitations due to the shortage of manpower for effective monitoring in a city where adherence to rules can be inconsistent.

Key recommendations put forth by the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum encompass a range of measures to address the congestion issue:

  • Installation of traffic signals at critical intersections, such as Dorabjee Chowk crossroad and GoldCoast & Symbiosis School T-junction on VIP Airport Road, within a span of 15 days.
  • Deployment of traffic wardens during peak morning and evening hours until the traffic signals are operational.
  • Vigorous enforcement of ‘No parking / no halting’ regulations along VIP Airport Road, focusing on private taxicabs and vehicles around Sanjay Park slums.
  • Strict actions against private taxicabs contributing to congestion on the diagonal road from VIP Airport Road to 509 chowk.
  • Ensuring proper functioning of existing traffic signals at Gangapuram Chowk and Datta Mandir Chowk during peak hours.
  • Exploration of P1/P2 parking zones on congested routes and contemplation of converting certain roads to one-way thoroughfares to ease traffic.
  • Prohibition of parking for commercial and private vehicles on public roads.
  • Reassignment of hawkers and vendors to designated zones, with specific recommendations directed towards the Pune Municipal Corporation.
  • Clearing footpaths and roads of debris, garbage, and obstructions to facilitate smooth traffic movement.
  • Active monitoring and regulation of driving schools, vehicle repair facilities, abandoned vehicles, and auto rickshaw stands.

The Viman Nagar Citizens Forum’s proactive stance in seeking viable solutions reflects a community-driven approach towards ameliorating traffic congestion and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and commuters in the area.
