Under-Construction Well Tragedy: NDRF Retrieves Bodies of Trapped Labourers in Pune

Tragedy struck Mhasobawadi village in Pune’s Indapur taluka when an under-construction well’s inner wall collapsed, trapping four workers beneath a mass of soil and concrete. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, prompting a swift response from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to initiate a search and rescue operation.

After over 48 hours of intense efforts, the NDRF successfully recovered three bodies on Friday, shedding light on the grim aftermath of the tragic incident. The search operation was launched by the NDRF in collaboration with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and Pune District Disaster Management Officer, following the requisition for assistance.

The incident had occurred in the Mhasobawadi village, situated in the Indapur taluka of Pune district, approximately 120 km away from Pune city. The well’s inner wall collapse had left the four labourers trapped under a mound of soil and concrete, raising alarm and prompting the immediate intervention of the NDRF.

The NDRF team had embarked on the search operation early Wednesday morning, deploying their expertise and resources to locate the missing individuals. The recovery operation has been challenging due to the hazardous conditions caused by the loosened soil due to recent rains.

Officials are currently in the process of identifying the bodies that have been recovered. The tragic incident has claimed the lives of Somnath Laxman Gaikwad (34), Javed Akbar Mulani (34), Parshuram Bansilal Chavan (30), and Manoj Maruti Sawant (50) – the four unfortunate labourers who were caught in the well’s collapse.
