A comprehensive study comparing road accidents in Maharashtra for the years 2022 and 2023 has revealed a concerning trend: the majority of accidents involve two-wheelers and pedestrians. As the numbers continue to rise, authorities are taking proactive measures to promote road safety and reduce these incidents.
According to the study, an alarming 70 to 80 percent of road accidents in the region are attributed to two-wheelers and pedestrians. These findings highlight the vulnerability of these groups and underscore the urgent need for increased awareness and safety measures.
To address this critical issue, authorities have turned their attention to helmet usage among two-wheeler riders. In accordance with Section 194D of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, individuals failing to comply with helmet regulations can face fines and penalties. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive approach, the Pimpri Chinchwad Regional Transport Office (RTO) has taken an active role in spreading awareness about helmet usage.
The RTO’s initiatives include the distribution of awareness notices in private offices, educational institutions such as schools and colleges, and various government establishments. These notices serve as reminders of the importance of wearing helmets, providing essential information that can help save lives on the road.
Furthermore, the RTO has conducted awareness sessions that highlight the significance of helmet usage while riding a two-wheeler. These sessions utilize examples and presentations to drive home the message that helmets are not just accessories but essential safety gear.
A critical observation made through the study is the higher number of two-wheeler riders involved in fatal accidents compared to other types of vehicles. This alarming statistic has spurred the Department of Transportation into action. Authorities are employing diverse strategies to encourage individuals to prioritize safety by wearing helmets when traveling on two-wheelers.
