Tragic Suicide of Teacher in Pune Highlights Pressures in Education

Pune, August 9th, 2023: A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in a village near Daund, where a 45-year-old teacher, Arvind Dnyaneshwar Deokar, reportedly took his own life due to the distress of failing to retain students in the school where he was posted. The tragic incident sheds light on the immense pressures and challenges faced by educators in today’s competitive educational landscape.

Arvind Dnyaneshwar Deokar had been assigned to a school located at Home Vasti, near Javjibuvachi wadi village in Daund, merely a month and a half prior to the unfortunate incident. The school, run by Zila Parishad, had a mere 10 students when he joined.

However, within a short span of time, the situation took a downturn. Some days after Deokar’s arrival, he requested the students to help clean up the school premises in the absence of other staff. Tragically, this led to an unintended consequence. The parents of these students expressed their objections and decided to withdraw their children from the school.

It’s reported that Deokar consumed pesticide on August 3, seemingly blaming himself for the students’ departure. He sent a WhatsApp message to a relative, outlining his reasons for his actions before consuming the pesticide.

Despite being rushed to the Uruli Kanchan hospital for immediate medical treatment, his condition worsened. He was subsequently transferred to another hospital in the city, where he tragically passed away on August 8.
