Traffic Chaos on Pune-Satara Highway as Five-Vehicle Pileup Causes Delays

Pune, 27th January 2024: A five-vehicle pileup on the Pune-Satara highway near Sevadi Saturday morning resulted in significant traffic delays, aggravated by the delayed arrival of the National Highway Authority’s crane.

The incident unfolded in Sevadi when a tempo broke through the divider and collided with a pole on Friday night. Subsequently, a state transport bus, a pick-up truck, and a motorcar came to a halt due to the fallen divider structure, creating a pileup. A speeding truck then collided with these vehicles, causing the motorcar to fall off the flyover. Fortunately, the ST bus managed to avoid falling, preventing potential catastrophe, and no severe injuries were reported among the vehicle occupants.

Despite prompt responses from the Rajgad police and eyewitnesses, the National Highway Authority’s crane, responsible for handling accidents and emergencies, failed to reach the site for nearly three hours. Authorities had to resort to using a private crane to clear the vehicles, leading to an extended traffic jam that inconvenienced commuters for the same duration.

BJ Sharma of the patrolling team expressed frustration, citing that the contractor responsible for the crane had not dispatched it due to an overdue bill. This delay hindered efforts to mobilize alternative cranes promptly.
