In response to the ongoing debate surrounding the establishment of a fish market by the Gultekdi market committee, the fish and butcher trade association in Pune is calling for the creation of a dedicated fish market yard. The association contends that, similar to the vegetable market yard in Gultekdi, a separate space is needed to provide customers with access to fresh and healthy fish.
The demand stems from the opposition faced by the Gultekdi market committee’s initiative to introduce a fish market, particularly from individuals within the market yard and members of the Jain community. In light of this resistance, the association is advocating for the creation of an independent fish market in a location distinct from the Gultekdi vegetable market yard.
A member of the fish and butcher trade association emphasized that while non-vegetarian food may not be suitable for certain communities, fish consumption is recognized as beneficial for overall health. Therefore, the establishment of a separate market yard in Pune dedicated to fish is deemed necessary. The member further stressed the importance of selecting a location that avoids causing any hurt to caste or religious sentiments.
Presently, fish markets in areas such as Ganesh Peth and those operating outside the city face challenges in maintaining fish due to inadequate facilities, including a lack of proper cold storage. To address this issue and ensure the trade of healthy fish in Pune, the association is advocating for the creation of an integrated fish market yard within the city.
A formal proposal outlining this demand has been submitted on behalf of the association to the Department of Fisheries of the state government.
