Through the Lens: Capturing the Essence of Project Tiger’s Journey

Tiger Fest In Pune

Pune is set to host a remarkable exhibition titled ‘Golden Years of Project Tiger’ at the Yashwantrao Chavan Art Gallery in Kothrud, organized by the NGO ‘Jividha.’ Commencing on November 29, the exhibition aims to shed light on the significant achievements of Project Tiger over the past 50 years.

In 1973, the Project Tiger movement was initiated in India to safeguard the nation’s dwindling tiger population. At the time, the number of tigers faced a severe decline, prompting the need for conservation efforts. The Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand was established as the first tiger reserve in India, and the Melghat Tiger Reserve holds the distinction of being Maharashtra’s first tiger reserve. Today, with approximately 3,600 tigers, India accounts for 75% of the global tiger population—a testament to the success of wildlife conservation efforts.

Rajiv Pandit, President of Jividha, expressed the significance of the exhibition, stating, “This exhibition, ‘Golden Years of Project Tiger,’ commemorates the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger. In addition to highlighting the journey so far, the exhibition will delve into the positive impacts on the economy, environment, and the employment opportunities generated for those residing near tiger reserves. It will also address the challenges that lie ahead in preserving these majestic creatures.”

The exhibition will feature 75 informative posters and display 70 to 75 pictures that capture the essence of Project Tiger’s journey. Entry to the exhibition will be free for all attendees.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 pm on November 29, with the exhibition running from November 30 to December 3, from 11 am to 8 pm.
