Technical Hurdle Emerges: Pune’s Lohegaon-Pune Airport Road Connectivity Stalls Over Defence Ministry Queries

Pune, August 22, 2023 – The Ministry of Defence has encountered an unexpected technical snag for the second time while reviewing the proposal put forth by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regarding alternative road arrangements in the Lohegaon region.

Swiftly addressing these discrepancies, the PMC has taken corrective measures and subsequently provided updated details to the Defence Ministry. It is anticipated that a response from the Ministry of Defence regarding these proposed road modifications will be received within the next 15 days.

Both the central and state governments are currently focused on the expansion of Pune’s airport runway. However, as this runway extension progresses, the road connecting Lohegaon to Weikfield Chowk (near Kendriya Vidyalaya no. 2) is expected to be temporarily closed. In response to this potential inconvenience, the municipal administration and Air Force officials jointly evaluated the situation and suggested the creation of two alternative road routes.

Following established procedures, the necessary information was sent to the Ministry of Defence for approval. Unfortunately, the Defence Ministry identified discrepancies in the diversion plans for the alternative roads, accompanied by technical oversights.

Displaying a commitment to accurate submissions, the Pune Municipal Corporation swiftly rectified the identified errors, submitting revised and precise information to the Defence Ministry.

Vikas Dhakane, Additional Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation, explained, “We have received technical oversights from the defence ministry for the second time. After careful resolution, we have re-submitted the corrected data to the Ministry of Defence. We remain hopeful that the Ministry will grant approval for the proposed alternative road projects within the next 15 days.”

The forthcoming response from the Ministry of Defence will play a pivotal role in advancing this initiative, as Pune seeks a speedy resolution to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for its residents.
