Sustainable Celebrations: PMC’s Drive to Collect and Recycle Old Goods in Pune

As the festive season approaches, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a distinctive initiative to collect old, discarded goods from citizens that are frequently abandoned on city roads and riverbanks. This sustainable drive aligns with the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, with the collected items set to find new purpose.

A Multifaceted Effort

PMC established a network of 91 collection centers across various locations in different wards. Today marked the commencement of this endeavor, and the response from the public was impressive. Citizens flocked to these collection points between 10 am and 4 pm to submit their old goods, ensuring they are utilized in an eco-friendly manner.

Diverse Collection

The extensive list of items collected included 269 mattresses weighing approximately 4,168 kilograms, 337 pillows with a total weight of around 701 kilograms, an astonishing 5,630 kilograms of unused clothes, and 492 pieces of furniture weighing about 9,188 kilograms.

Sustainability and Pollution Control

The primary objective of this initiative is to significantly reduce pollution and curb illegal waste disposal within the city limits. Typically, citizens tend to replace their old mattresses and other items during the Diwali and Dussehra festivals, and during this process, they often abandon these old goods openly. PMC’s campaign encourages responsible recycling and waste management.

This effort showcases a commendable approach by PMC to address pollution issues and promote a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Pune, making the festive season not just a time of celebration but also of responsible community participation.
