Surge in Passenger Numbers on Extended Routes Boosts Pune Metro

Pune, 4th August 2023 – Since the recent expansion of services on the extended routes connecting Vanaz to Ruby Hall and Pimpri to District Court, Pune Metro has experienced an impressive surge in ridership, marking a significant milestone in the city’s public transportation system.

Following the official commencement of these extended routes on August 1 at 5 pm, Pune Metro witnessed a remarkable increase in daily ridership. By 7 pm on Thursday, the number of passengers traveling on the extended routes had exceeded 28,000. This represents a substantial six-fold rise in daily ridership compared to figures before the expansion.

The newly introduced extended services include the 9.7 km Vanaz to Ruby Hall route and the 13.9 km Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to District Court route. On the very first day of the launch, a total of 12,918 passengers availed the extended Metro services. The trend continued to soar, with more than 30,000 passengers choosing the Metro on Wednesday. Notably, the count reached 28,698 passengers by 7 pm on Thursday, further indicating the growing popularity of the extended service.

Prior to the expansion, the operational lines were Vanaz to Garware College and Pimpri to Phugewadi. Since its launch on March 6 last year, the Metro services catered to a total of 19,78,160 passengers over the year, averaging around five thousand passengers daily. However, with the introduction of the extended services, the daily ridership has witnessed an extraordinary boost to 30 thousand passengers, a remarkable six-fold increase. Although future sustainability of this initial surge remains a question, the positive response is undeniable.

Several major stations witnessed a considerable influx of passengers by 7 pm on Thursday. Ruby Hall reported 3,361 passengers, followed by Vanaz with 3,253 passengers, Pimpri with 2,904 passengers, District Court with 2,365 passengers, and Shivajinagar with 2,156 passengers.
