Surge in E-Vehicle Registration: Pune Witnesses a Remarkable Shift

Pune: Over the course of one year, spanning from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023, Pune’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) has witnessed a substantial surge in the registration of electric vehicles (EVs), marking a notable shift in the city’s transportation landscape. During this period, a remarkable 30,869 electric vehicles were formally registered, a significant upswing from the 15,198 e-vehicles recorded in the city in 2022. This catapults the total count of e-vehicles in Pune to an impressive 46,067 by the close of March 2023.

In the midst of this surge, Pune’s broader vehicular scenario unveils a dynamic picture. The city boasts a robust fleet of 3,777,973 petrol-powered cars, with a noteworthy 183,766 of them being registered between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.

According to an official statement, the compelling allure of complete tax exemption for EV purchases has spurred an increasing number of individuals to embrace electric mobility. The delineation of specific standards for categorizing electric vehicles as distinct entities within the vehicular domain has further streamlined the integration of EVs into the transportation ecosystem.

E-bikes with power outputs below 250 watts and top speeds under 25 kmph lie beyond this classification. These low-powered electric motorcycles are exempt from traditional registration and licensing requisites, introducing an added layer of accessibility and convenience.

A survey of Pune’s vehicular landscape as of March 31, 2023, unveils an intriguing insight. The total automobile count within the city stands at 4,487,523, with electric vehicles comprising 46,067, roughly constituting 1% of the entire fleet. In contrast, the majority of vehicles on Pune’s roads, a substantial 84%, remain powered by petrol, numbering 3,777,973 units.

The doubling of electric vehicle registrations in Pune within the short span from 2022 to the present reflects a promising trend. It underscores a growing societal consciousness of environmental concerns and the collective effort to preserve fuel resources like petrol and diesel. This aligns with the evolving ethos of sustainable and responsible transportation practices.
