Streamlining Traffic: NHAI’s 5-Kilometer Flyover to Transform Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking a significant step to ease traffic congestion and enhance commuter safety on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass. The proposed solution involves the construction of a 5-kilometer-long flyover, aiming to streamline traffic flow and provide a hassle-free experience for travelers.

According to Bharat Todkari, a consulting engineer with NHAI Pune, the flyover will span 5 kilometers, starting from Swaminarayan Temple, Narhe, and connecting directly to Warje. The primary objective of this project is to address the traffic challenges faced by commuters using the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass. It will create a seamless route for motorists, especially heavy vehicle traffic that travels outside the city, thus alleviating congestion and enhancing road safety.

Currently in the proposal stage with the Central Government, the flyover project will progress to the tendering process upon approval. The estimated budget for this ambitious project stands at approximately Rs 4,000 Crores.

The Katraj-Dehu Road bypass, constructed nearly three decades ago, has witnessed a decrease in motorist safety over the years. Experts specializing in urban planning and road infrastructure attribute accidents on the bypass, particularly around the tunnel section that crosses the Katraj-Navale Bridge, to infrastructure shortcomings and design flaws.

To address these issues, experts suggest the construction of an elevated bridge or an alternative bypass featuring adequate service roads. NHAI’s decision to embark on the 5-kilometer flyover project aligns with this recommendation. Once the elevated road is completed, heavy vehicles will be directed to use it, eliminating slope-related issues. Simultaneously, the existing road will cater to other vehicles, such as cars and two-wheelers, while remaining accessible to locals.
