In response to the recurrent issue of waterlogging during monsoon season, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has embarked on a series of proactive measures aimed at mitigating the impact of heavy rains on city roads and infrastructure.
Identifying Problem Areas
Following the onset of pre-monsoon showers that inundated several areas across Pune, including Yerawada, Vimannagar, Sinhagad Road, Koregaon Park, and others, the drainage department conducted thorough inspections to assess the extent of the problem. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the PMC swiftly moved to address the identified waterlogging hotspots through targeted interventions.
Infrastructure Upgrades
One key initiative undertaken by the PMC road department involves raising drainage chambers to align with road levels, thereby facilitating smoother water flow and reducing the risk of flooding. Notable examples include the elevation of drainage chambers on VR Shinde Road in Bibvewadi and the construction of a new drainage chamber in Pulachiwadi at Deccan Gymkhana. Additionally, stormwater line connection work has commenced to link culverts and enhance drainage capacity, exemplifying the municipality’s commitment to bolstering infrastructure resilience.
Strategic Interventions
To enhance surface water runoff and alleviate waterlogging in low-lying areas, the PMC has implemented strategic interventions such as breaking footpaths at Shivaji Chowk on Satara Road. By creating channels for water flow to nearby nullahs, these measures aim to minimize the accumulation of rainwater and prevent associated disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Hands-On Supervision
The proactive approach adopted by the PMC has garnered support from senior officials, with PMC Commissioner and additional commissioner personally visiting waterlogging sites across the city to assess the situation firsthand. This hands-on supervision underscores the municipality’s commitment to addressing citizen concerns and ensuring the effectiveness of implemented solutions.
