State to get four new weather doppler radars; Pune to get weather doppler radar

PUNE: The weather doppler radars play an important role in weather prediction and issuing warnings before heavy rain. At present, such radars have been installed in Mumbai and Nagpur and soon, it will be installed in Pune too, said IMD Chief Dr KS Hosalikar. He gave this information during the visit of Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

When asked about the number of weather doppler radars,
Dr Hosalikar said, “At present, there are two doppler radars in Mumbai and one in Nagpur. Maharashtra is also benefitting by radars installed in Goa and Telangana. The process of installing four doppler radars is underway and locations are being finalised. A radar will be installed in Pune and the search for a suitable location is going on.”

Incidents of natural disasters are increasing day by day. Because of climate change, monsoon patterns are also changing and cases of very heavy rain have increased. Against this background, the state needs a doppler radar.

The mechanism which provides accurate information about the monsoon is weather doppler radar. The mechanism which is used all over the world, directs electric gravitational waves on clouds. The returning waves gather all information about the clouds like an x-ray.

The doppler radar provides accurate information even when clouds are moving. With the help of doppler radar, information about rains, cloudburst and hailstorm can be available four to six hours earlier. Accurate prediction can be made about rain, hailstorm or cloudburst over a 100 km area.
