Srishti Bandh Bambu Rakhi Mahotsav: A Celebration of Eco-Friendly Bamboo Craftsmanship at Pune University

Savitribai Phule Pune University witnessed a spectacular showcase of bamboo-crafted creations during the Rakhi Mahotsav celebrations. The event, held at the Marble Auditorium, was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi, marking the beginning of a sustainable and festive extravaganza.

This unique exhibition, a collaboration between the Skill Development Center’s Handicrafts and Art Center and the Melghat Support Group, aims to bring attention to eco-friendly practices and bamboo craftsmanship.

The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Suresh Gosavi, was adorned with a rakhi tied by Pooja More from the Skill Development Center, marking the auspicious occasion of Rakhi Mahotsav. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Dr. Radhakrishna Pandit, Director of Skill Development Center, Ravindra Shingnapurkar, Member of the Management Council, Dr. Prafull Pawar, Registrar, Shailendra Devlankar, Director of Higher and Technical Education Department, Dr. Mahesh Kakade, Director of Examination and Evaluation Board, Charushila Gayke, Finance and Accounts Officer, along with other esteemed members of the Management Council.

The Srishti Bandh Bambu Rakhi Mahotsav, organized by the Handicrafts and Arts Unit of the University, is set to captivate visitors from August 26 to 30.

The centerpiece of the festival is the environmentally-conscious Srishti Bandh Bambu Rakhi, meticulously crafted by women from the Korku tribal community of Melghat. These distinct rakhi pieces carry names given by the talented women artisans themselves, adding a personalized touch to each creation.

As a significant step towards skill enhancement and empowerment, the Skill Development Center and the Melghat Support Group have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership aims to introduce two credit courses within the university curriculum, focused on training students in various bamboo-based crafts. By imparting these valuable skills, the initiative aims to promote self-reliance and create potential industries and job opportunities through the acquired expertise.

Dr. Radhakrishna Pandit, Director of the Skill Development Centre at Savitribai Phule Pune University, expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing efforts to bridge education and hands-on training. This approach nurtures a new generation of skilled artisans, aligning with the university’s commitment to fostering holistic learning experiences.
