Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is gearing up for significant transformations as it enters its diamond jubilee year. Vice-Chancellor Suresh Gosavi shared insightful plans during an interaction with journalists, shedding light on key initiatives that aim to enhance the overall academic experience and opportunities for students.

One of the notable proposals is the construction of a hostel capable of accommodating 1,000 students, with separate accommodations for boys and girls. The construction timeline is estimated to span a year and a half. Addressing the food-related concerns of students, a steam-based central kitchen is also in the works, with the intention of providing improved food services within the university premises.

Speaking about the university’s expansion, Vice-Chancellor Gosavi emphasized, “The university is embarking on ambitious projects in celebration of its diamond jubilee year.” Collaborations with renowned international institutions such as Texas University are being initiated, offering post-doctoral fellowships to students. Additionally, an agreement with the Union Ministry of Forest will enable senior forest officers to pursue postgraduate programs at SPPU.

Acknowledging the need for comprehensive education, Gosavi highlighted, “Multi-disciplinary schools will also be established at the Ahmednagar and Nashik sub-centres.” The university is actively working towards implementing the new National Education Policy in all its affiliated colleges from the upcoming academic year. A variety of graduate and postgraduate programs are in development and are expected to be introduced by September 30.

Furthermore, SPPU is actively seeking recognition as an ‘Institute of Eminence’ from the Central Government, signifying its commitment to excellence in education and research.

The university’s visionary approach extends to several proposed projects, including a Research Assistance Centre, a centralized system for procurement and tendering, and the creation of a support cell for students with disabilities. Celebrating its diamond jubilee, SPPU intends to publish a special commemorative issue, along with establishing an independent centre for developing Marathi syllabi and restoring the Academic Calendar.

Collaboration with the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences is set to bring the Maharashtra Science Congress to SPPU, aligning with the prestigious annual Indian Science Congress Association event held across the country. As SPPU takes bold strides towards its future, these initiatives promise to enrich the educational landscape and provide unparalleled opportunities for students.
