SPPU Takes Firm Stand Against Defaulting Colleges, Threatens Closure Over Unpaid Fees

Pune’s Premier University to Crack Down on Affiliated Institutions with Outstanding Dues

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is set to review approximately 150 affiliated colleges owing to unpaid affiliation fees, amounting to over ₹1 crore, and educational discrepancies. With the administration contemplating the closure of these institutions in the upcoming year, the management council is poised to take decisive action against defaulting colleges.

The predicament has prompted SPPU to consider revoking affiliations if dues remain unsettled, potentially leading to the shutdown of these non-compliant colleges.

As the largest state university in terms of affiliations, SPPU oversees 783 affiliated colleges, catering to around 7.9 lakh students. The distribution includes 453 colleges in Pune district, 149 in Ahmednagar, and 181 in Nashik and Dadra Nagar Haveli. These institutions encompass various categories, including those exclusively for girls, management institutes, research centers, and night colleges.

This strategic move by SPPU reaffirms its commitment to upholding educational standards and financial discipline within its affiliated network. Furthermore, it aligns with the broader trend of granting autonomy to select colleges, with over 45 institutions having gained autonomy in recent years.

The university’s stance emphasizes the significance of timely fee payments and adherence to educational norms. By ensuring compliance, SPPU aims to preserve its status as a premier educational institution while prioritizing the welfare of students and stakeholders.
