SPPU Expands Student Support: Launching Two New Cells for Inclusivity and Equal Opportunities

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is set to bolster its commitment to student welfare with the introduction of two new assistance cells on its premises. These cells, focusing on persons with disabilities (PwD) and equal opportunities, are anticipated to commence operations by the end of this month, featuring a dedicated staff member and 2-3 volunteers for each cell, according to Vijay Khare, the officiating registrar of the university.

The PwD cell, strategically located within the placement cell area, aims to function as a comprehensive facilitation center, streamlining the support services for disabled students. With a sprawling 411-acre campus, the PwD cell seeks to eliminate the need for disabled students to navigate various departments independently.

“When a disabled student arrives on campus for any task, they should head directly to this cell. The staff will provide initial guidance, and if the student requires assistance in visiting departments or the library, our dedicated volunteers will be there to help,” explained Khare.

Simultaneously, the equal opportunity cell endeavors to guide students, especially those from disadvantaged categories, in matters related to higher education, scholarships, fellowship opportunities, employment-seeking, and skill development. This initiative follows a letter from the then collector Rajesh Deshmukh in August 2023, urging affiliated colleges and research units to establish an equal opportunity cell or face potential consequences.

As SPPU takes these progressive steps towards inclusivity and support, students are poised to benefit from more streamlined and accessible assistance, fostering an environment conducive to holistic development and growth.
