Special Police Team Deployed to Combat Robberies on Mumbai-Pune Railway Route

In the Face of Rising Theft Incidents

In a bid to tackle a surge in theft incidents along the Mumbai-Pune railway route, authorities have launched a concerted effort to crack down on criminal activities targeting passengers. Thefts, predominantly occurring during technical halts in the Khandala Ghat section, have prompted swift action from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Police Force (RPF).

The Alarming Trend

Over the past few months, a string of thefts has rattled passengers and authorities alike, prompting the filing of six First Information Reports (FIRs) by the GRP. Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Gaikwad, leading operations at the Pune railway station, unveiled the perpetrators’ modus operandi, which involves snatching valuables like gold jewellery and mobile phones from passengers who unwittingly leave their windows open during the night.

A Strategic Response

To counter these criminal activities effectively, a specialized team comprising eight GRP personnel and six RPF personnel has been strategically deployed at critical junctures along the ghat section. This proactive measure aims to deter further incidents of theft and bolster passenger safety on the route.

Gratitude from Passengers

Passengers, apprised of the risks associated with night halts in the ghat section, have expressed gratitude for the concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies. Kiran Pisal, a frequent traveller on the Sai Shirdi Express, commended the GRP’s initiative, underscoring the significance of safeguarding passengers from potential harm.

Raising Awareness and Vigilance

In addition to ramping up personnel for round-the-clock patrolling, the GRP has launched awareness campaigns to caution passengers against opening windows during night journeys. Gaikwad highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives, citing a notable reduction in reported theft incidents as a result of heightened vigilance.
