Shine Bright, Breathe Right: PMC’s Eco-Friendly Diwali Guidelines Illuminate the Way

Pune Municipal Corporation

Diwali, the festival of lights, is a time for joy and celebration. However, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) releasing guidelines for an eco-friendly celebration, citizens are urged to light up their homes while keeping the environment in mind.

Celebrating Diwali without the traditional firecrackers may seem unconventional, but it’s a step towards combating air pollution. The excessive smoke emitted from firecrackers has been linked to respiratory diseases, making it crucial for citizens to refrain from their use. By doing so, we can collectively contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

The guidelines also address the issue of noise pollution, emphasizing the importance of using crackers that are within the permissible decibel limit. With a cap set at 125 decibels, citizens are encouraged to enjoy the festivities without causing discomfort to others. Moreover, creating designated “no sound zones” in sensitive areas such as educational institutions, hospitals, and courts is a commendable initiative to ensure a peaceful celebration for everyone.

To further reduce the environmental impact, citizens are advised to opt for solar-powered lights, an energy-efficient alternative to traditional lighting. Additionally, the use of eco-friendly materials for rangoli, such as natural ingredients instead of chemical dyes, promotes sustainable practices.

The guidelines also highlight the adverse effects of Plaster of Paris forts commonly used in festive decorations. PMC suggests choosing natural and environmentally friendly alternatives to minimize the ecological footprint.

As citizens gear up for Diwali, the PMC’s eco-friendly guidelines serve as a reminder that celebrating this joyous occasion doesn’t have to come at the expense of our environment. By adopting these practices, we can illuminate our homes without dimming the prospects of a greener and healthier future.
