The Pune district has witnessed a startling surge of over 113% in reported accidents after the year 2020. This concerning trend has particularly impacted pedestrians and motorcyclists, who constitute a significant portion of the victims, according to District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh. This issue was the focal point of discussion during the recent District Road Safety Committee meeting.

District Collector Deshmukh emphasized the importance of road safety, urging motorcyclists to prioritize their safety by wearing helmets while riding. He stressed the need for creating awareness among the general public about the necessity of using helmets for protection.

Addressing the issue, Deshmukh highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive approach to accident prevention. He suggested that municipalities, the public works department, transportation departments, and law enforcement agencies collaborate to scientifically analyze accident-prone areas, commonly known as “black spots.” By understanding the causes behind accidents and implementing targeted strategies, accidents could be minimized and lives could be saved.

The meeting included key officials from various departments, including the Public Works Department, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), and the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Discussions centered around identifying and rectifying these black spots to curb the alarming increase in accidents.

One of the key tools in this endeavor is the “AERAD” system, an integrated road accident information system that allows authorities to analyze accident data and identify patterns and potential causes. By understanding these causes, stakeholders can develop strategies to enhance road safety at these locations.

Bappa Bahir, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, revealed that a total of 63 black spots have been identified across Pune district. Collaborative efforts have already shown positive results in reducing accidents in certain areas. For instance, joint actions by various agencies have led to a decrease in accidents at locations like the Navale Bridge on the Pune-Bangalore Highway. Similar initiatives on the Pune-Ahmednagar Highway have also yielded positive outcomes.
