Scindia Open to Maharashtra’s Second Pune Airport Proposal, Pending Formal Submission

In a recent development, Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Civil Aviation Minister, has shown openness towards considering Maharashtra’s proposal for a second airport in Pune. While addressing a Lok Sabha session, Scindia stated that the Centre would be willing to review the proposal upon its formal submission. This comes in the backdrop of the upcoming inauguration of a new terminal at Pune International Airport.

Responding to a query raised by Shiv Sena member Shrirang Appa Barne, Scindia emphasized the need for active engagement with the state government on the matter. He acknowledged that while the state had provided details about the proposed site, concerns from local farmers regarding land acquisition and construction had been raised.

The concept of a second airport for Pune was initially introduced in 2002, with Chakan identified as the initial location. However, due to opposition from farmers, the plan was later relocated to Purandar. Despite this shift, challenges persisted at the new site, causing delays in the progression of the project. The forthcoming Integrated Terminal Building at Pune Airport, covering 50,000 sqm and equipped with 10 aerobridges and 72 check-in counters, marks a significant development for the region.

Scindia shed light on the broader national scenario, revealing that flight cancellations accounted for only 0.7% of total air traffic movements across the country.
