Recent incidents involving Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) electric buses have sparked widespread concern among residents, raising questions about the adequacy of maintenance and safety protocols governing the fleet’s operations. Reports of battery overheating, dysfunctionality, and even explosions have prompted calls for greater transparency and accountability from PMPML authorities.
Growing Concerns and Incidents: In recent weeks, residents of Pune have voiced escalating worries regarding the safety and reliability of PMPML electric buses. Multiple reports have highlighted incidents of battery-related malfunctions, with instances of overheating and explosions. Concerns have been particularly raised about buses, including those from the Chinese-made Onatwa brand, citing reliability issues and technical malfunctions.
Call for Transparency and Accountability: Sanjay Shitole, an activist from Pune, emphasized the critical need for maintenance and monitoring of electric vehicles, expressing concerns over the reliability of PMPML buses. He highlighted instances where battery issues have led to safety hazards, underlining the importance of addressing these issues promptly. The involvement of Chinese companies in the procurement process has also raised questions regarding accountability and oversight.
Demand for Action: Despite assurances from PMPML authorities, citizens remain skeptical about the safety of electric buses and are demanding greater transparency and accountability. Jugal Rathi, president of the PMP Pravasi Manch, criticized the negligence of PMPML management, holding them accountable for the safety of passengers. He called for a thorough investigation into the root causes of battery failures and urged authorities to take decisive action to ensure passenger safety.
Response from PMPML: In response to allegations, Satish Gate, a PMPML spokesperson, clarified the organization’s role in operating vendor buses. He explained that vendors are responsible for maintenance and operations, with PMPML compensating them based on kilometers traveled. However, he acknowledged challenges such as overcrowding, particularly during summers, and emphasized the vendors’ responsibility for bus maintenance and service.
