The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the long-awaited road widening project along the Mundhwa-Manjari road in Keshavnagar, with the aim of improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion. However, the endeavor has sparked concerns among residents regarding the scope of the project and the management of encroachments.
According to Ranjeet Lonkar, President of the Keshavnagar Welfare Association, while the PMC has started widening the road to 18 meters from Keshavnagar Chowk to Z Corner, there are lingering issues regarding unauthorized constructions and encroachments, particularly at Keshavnagar Chowk. Lonkar emphasized the necessity for comprehensive action across the entire stretch of the road, rather than focusing solely on certain sections.
Lonkar stated, “We support the road widening initiative, but it must address the bottleneck at Keshavnagar Chowk, which has been a longstanding issue for 20 years. Merely widening the road at certain points while neglecting others is not a viable solution.”
Sahebrao Dandage, Superintendent Engineer of the PMC Road Department, confirmed that the road widening work is underway, aiming to expand the existing 7 to 8-meter-wide road to 18 meters. The ultimate plan envisions a 36-meter-wide road, but current land acquisitions permit an 18-meter width initially. Dandage assured that the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance overall road infrastructure.
The concerns raised by residents underscore the importance of inclusive planning and community engagement in municipal projects. As road development initiatives progress, collaboration between local authorities and residents will be vital to ensure effective implementation and address pertinent issues.
