Rising Concerns: Pune Records 12,020 Cases of Drunk Driving in 5 Years

In the past five years, Pune has witnessed a concerning surge in drunk driving cases, with as many as 12,020 individuals fined for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, according to data provided by the Pune traffic police department. The highest number of cases, 10,311, was reported in 2019, reflecting the urgent need for stricter measures against this dangerous practice.

Vijaykumar Magar, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for traffic, emphasized the department’s efforts to monitor and take action against drink-driving violators. Driving licenses of frequent violators have also been canceled to deter further offenses.

While police took action against 1,324 drunk driving violators in 2020, the numbers significantly decreased to 55 and 37 cases in 2021 and 2022, respectively. However, data from this year until September already shows an increasing trend, with 293 reported drink and drive cases.

The risks associated with drunk driving were tragically demonstrated on October 6 when a speeding car collided with multiple vehicles near the Z bridge, connecting Jungali Maharaj Road to Sadashiv Peth. The incident resulted in one fatality and injuries to four others. Both the accused and his co-passenger were found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Drunk driving is a significant factor contributing to fatal accidents, often involving reckless driving and excessive speed. In some cases, alcohol consumption is not immediately indicated in accident reports and only becomes apparent through hospital records. Alcohol impairs the driver’s nervous system, leading to a loss of vehicle control and, ultimately, accidents.

Concerns have been raised by city-based activists regarding the sporadic nature of police action against drunk-driving violators, which typically intensifies during major festivals and year-end celebrations. These activists argue that stricter and more consistent enforcement is needed to prevent fatal accidents caused by drunk driving.

Vijay Kumbhar, an activist, pointed out that police actions tend to focus on major festivals and December 31 celebrations. He suggested that continuous monitoring and stringent action are essential to curbing the prevalence of drunk driving.

Kumbhar acknowledged the complexities of taking action against drunk driving violators, particularly related to determining if the individual had permission to consume alcohol, where it was purchased, and whether the selling establishment had the necessary permits.

According to activists, police should prioritize awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers and consequences of drunk driving. While law enforcement is swift in addressing traffic signal violations, they often overlook cases of drunk driving. Activists call for the Regional Transport Department (RTO) to organize seminars and lectures to ensure drivers are well-informed about the rules and the impacts of their actions.
