Restless Nights in Pune’s Koregaon Park: Residents Push Authorities for a Noise-Free Zone

Residents of Koregaon Park Annex in Pune are grappling with persistent nighttime noise disturbances emanating from various eateries, particularly those situated along the Koregaon Park Annex – Mundhwa Road. The incessant noise from rooftop pubs and open-area restaurants is causing distress among the local population, prompting urgent calls for action.

Kewal Shah, a resident of Koregaon Park, expressed the community’s frustration, stating, “The open-air establishments like pubs and restaurants in the area, especially those on rooftops, consistently exceed permissible decibel limits. Regardless of whether it’s a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night, the noise levels become unbearable for nearby residents. The lack of control over noise pollution is a pressing concern, and we believe installing decibel meters at every establishment is a crucial step. Additionally, other effective solutions must be implemented to ensure that the peace of the neighborhood is not disrupted.”

Narendra Shah, another resident, highlighted the longstanding nature of the issue, saying, “This problem has persisted for a decade now. Despite multiple complaints to the police, the relief provided is short-lived, typically lasting only a week. The establishments initiate loud music and sounds as late as 1 am, continuing until 3 am. Authorities seem to be turning a blind eye, as complaints lodged on the emergency 100 number are promptly closed without resolving the problem. It’s disheartening, especially when some of these establishment owners reside in our society and other residential areas.”

An anonymous resident emphasized the futility of their complaints, stating, “We have lodged numerous complaints with the police, but the only outcome is a temporary pause in loud music for around half an hour. Subsequently, the noise resumes, and no concrete action is taken.”

In response to these concerns, Mahesh Bolkotagi, Police Inspector at Mundhwa Police Station, assured, “We conduct daily patrols, inspecting all hotels along Koregaon Park Annex, Mundhwa Road, Ghorpadi, and other areas. Immediate action is taken against establishments found violating noise regulations by playing loud music.”

Residents are hopeful that the authorities will take robust and sustained action to address the ongoing issue and restore tranquility to Koregaon Park Annex.
