Remembering Dr. Manuel Durairaj: A Pioneer in Cardiology and Compassionate Healer

Renowned Cardiologist Leaves Behind a Legacy of Medical Excellence and Selfless Service”

The medical community mourns the loss of Dr. Manuel Durairaj, a distinguished cardiologist whose contributions to the field of cardiology have left an indelible mark. Dr. Durairaj passed away on April 11, 2024, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of medical excellence, compassion, and dedication to his patients.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Durairaj distinguished himself as an exceptional clinician, researcher, and educator. Graduating as a Gold Medalist from Armed Forces Medical College, he completed his DM Cardiology at CMC Vellore in 1974, subsequently pioneering the DM Cardiology program at Poona University during his tenure as Head of Cardiology at MH (CTC), Lullanagar. His commitment to advancing cardiac care led him to establish the Marian Cardiac Centre and Research Foundation in Pune in 1988, where he served as Professor and the inaugural Chairman of the Academic Department of Cardiology at Grant Medical Foundation.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Durairaj was renowned for his unwavering dedication to his patients, both locally and internationally. His clinical acumen and compassionate care touched the lives of thousands of individuals, including patients from the Middle East, United States, West Indies, West Africa, and beyond. Religious leaders sought his guidance, drawn by his empathy and commitment to healing.

Dr. Manoj Durairaj, noted Heart Transplant Surgeon and Director of Marian Cardiac Centre, fondly remembers his father as a brilliant academician, astute clinician, and devoted family man. Dr. Manuel Durairaj’s commitment to medicine extended far beyond the walls of the hospital, as he continued to serve his patients well into his 80s, demonstrating an enduring dedication to their well-being.

Dr. Durairaj is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Valsamma, his children Mrs. Manju Durairaj Schwister and Dr. Manoj Durairaj, his son-in-law Mr. Eric Schwister, his daughter-in-law Mrs. Sheena Durairaj, and his grandchildren Joseph-Durai, James, and Maria.

The funeral service in honor of Dr. Manuel Durairaj will be held on April 12 at 4:30 PM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Pune, Prince of Wales Drive, followed by internment at Sepulchre Cemetery, Hadapsar.
