Pune’s Young Gandhians in Kothrud Foster Conservation and Skill with Free Charkha Spinning Training

Pune, Maharashtra – A group of young Gandhians in Pune has embarked on a remarkable initiative in the Kothrud area, offering free training in charkha spinning to interested individuals. Every Sunday, approximately 15-20 people gather at Gandhi Bhavan in Kothrud to learn the art of charkha spinning and yarn production.

Led by Madhav Sahstrbuddhe, a dedicated follower of Mahatma Gandhi and an experienced charkha practitioner, the group aims to raise awareness about the conservation of natural resources and promote the unique craft of charkha spinning. Since its inception in February, the initiative has gained momentum, attracting participants from various backgrounds including IT professionals, businessmen, students, teachers, and individuals of all age groups.

The Sunday morning sessions, held from 8 am to 10 am, provide a serene environment for individuals to find peace, practice concentration, and develop valuable skills. Sahstrbuddhe explains, “Our efforts are focused on spreading awareness about the conservation of natural resources and the significance of charkha spinning. Participants engage in the activity with the intention of promoting concentration and skill. We have witnessed the profound impact it has on individuals who find solace and a connection to Gandhi’s principles.”

Zubair, a corporate professional in an MNC, has been actively participating in the charkha spinning sessions since February. He shares his perspective, “We have expanded this activity to the Chinchwad area and have plans to extend it to Yamunanagar in the Nigdi area as well. As a working professional, this activity provides a means of concentration. Charkha spinning is not only a simple activity; it also symbolizes our solidarity with Gandhi’s ideals in today’s times. On an individual level, the act of using our hands to rotate the charkha helps develop skills and enhances concentration.”

The initiative not only preserves the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi but also highlights the importance of sustainable practices and traditional craftsmanship. Through their dedication and commitment, these young Gandhians in Pune are nurturing a renewed interest in charkha spinning, ensuring that this traditional art form continues to thrive in the modern era.
