Pune’s Weather Whiplash: Understanding the Recent Temperature Drop

Pune, a city known for its sweltering temperatures during the summer months, has experienced a notable reprieve with maximum temperatures dipping to a comfortable range of 30 to 31 degrees Celsius in the past 48 hours. This sudden decline in heat levels has provided much-needed relief to Pune’s residents, who have endured days of scorching weather conditions.

Following a prolonged period of intense heat, characterized by maximum temperatures soaring between 38 to 41 degrees Celsius, the recent shift to cooler weather has been met with relief across the city. Looking ahead, the weather forecast for the upcoming week indicates a continuation of partly cloudy skies, accompanied by temperatures ranging from 24 to 36 degrees Celsius. However, there is a possibility of rain or thunderstorms on 2nd and 3rd June, coinciding with the partly cloudy conditions. Despite these fluctuations, minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable, hovering between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius throughout the week.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), sheds light on the underlying factors contributing to Pune’s sudden temperature drop. He attributes this shift to the influx of moisture from the Arabian Sea, largely influenced by the severe cyclonic storm Remal.

While Remal predominantly bypassed Maharashtra, its impact was discernible in the significant reduction of temperatures experienced in Pune and surrounding regions. Kashyapi cautions that this relief may be short-lived, citing the establishment of a westerly wind pattern by Remal, which could lead to moisture depletion across Maharashtra and South Gujarat. Consequently, a sharp rise in daytime temperatures is anticipated over west central India, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and South Madhya Pradesh in the days to come.

Beyond its immediate effects on regional weather patterns, concerns arise regarding Remal’s potential impact on the onset of the southwest monsoon. While the IMD had earmarked 31st May as the expected onset date for the monsoon over Kerala, the depletion of moisture over the Bay of Bengal could delay its arrival in northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram by a day or two.

Kashyapi underscores the likelihood of disruptions in the further progression of the monsoon, despite an initial phase proceeding as scheduled. However, there remains a glimmer of hope as moisture depletion over the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon has been comparatively less significant, potentially facilitating the timely onset of monsoonal rains over Kerala and other regions across the country.
