Pune: In a remarkable achievement for water management and conservation, Pune has crossed a significant milestone with the successful installation of over 100,000 water meters in residential properties across the city. This milestone marks a crucial step towards efficient water utilization and distribution in the urban landscape.
Sources close to the development reveal that the initiative is part of a comprehensive plan that aims to further enhance water management infrastructure. Plans are underway to install an additional 191,000 water meters, establish 83 new water tanks, and lay out approximately 1,600 kilometers of fresh water channels. These measures collectively aim to optimize water distribution, reduce wastage, and ensure a sustainable water supply for the growing population of Pune.
The journey to achieve this milestone began in 2017 when authorities embarked on the endeavor to introduce water meters. However, the process faced a temporary setback due to the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic and certain administrative delays, causing a pause in operations for two years.
One of the challenges encountered during the project was the scarcity of microchips in the market, which hindered the timely procurement of water meters. Nevertheless, with the availability of necessary components now resolved, the installation process is projected to be completed by the end of December.
As Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials remain central to the implementation of this significant initiative, attempts were made to gather insights from them. However, despite concerted efforts, establishing direct contact with PMC officials proved to be challenging.
It is noteworthy that the accomplishment of surpassing the 100,000 water meter installation mark does not signify an immediate cessation of water taxes by the PMC. The corporation will continue to levy water taxes as the installation drive progresses. However, the long-term vision entails a shift from the current taxation model to a consumption-based calculation once the installation of water meters across the entire city reaches 100%.
The ongoing water meter installation drive plays a pivotal role in monitoring and managing water distribution. By pinpointing water consumption in specific areas, the PMC gains a more accurate understanding of the city’s water needs. This fine-tuned control over water supply management enables the authorities to make informed decisions and implement measures to ensure equitable distribution and efficient utilization of this precious resource.
