Pune’s Water Crisis: Divisional Commissioner Enforces Water-First Policy on New Constructions

Pune: In a decisive move to curb rampant construction, Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao has issued a directive, declaring a halt to new building projects within the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) jurisdiction. The order mandates a comprehensive assessment of water availability and domestic usage capacity, including drinking water, before any construction permissions are granted. Emphasizing the need for sustainable water management, Rao asserted that new developments must not strain the already limited water infrastructure, marking a pivotal step in addressing the region’s water crisis.

Thorough Water Assessment for Sustainable Urbanization

The order specifies that no new construction permits will be issued solely based on affidavits from builders. Instead, a thorough evaluation of water supply capacity from local bodies, PMRDA, and Zilla Parishad is now a prerequisite for any construction within the PMRDA limits. The directive aims to prevent exacerbating the existing water scarcity and ensure that new constructions adhere to responsible water management practices.

Collaborative Efforts for Water Supply Solutions

A recent meeting convened around 60 to 70 representatives from various entities, including Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, PMRDA, Zilla Parishad, and Gram Panchayat Housing Association, among others. The discussions focused on the prevailing water shortage and the demand for water supply through tankers to societies within Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Responding to concerns, the divisional commissioner stressed the need for unbiased evaluations of water supply via tankers, considering the critical nature of the issue.

Streamlined Communication for Effective Solutions

To enhance communication and address concerns efficiently, dedicated email IDs will be shared by both civic bodies for housing complexes to register water scarcity-related complaints. The complaints will be reviewed in subsequent meetings, with remedial measures proposed during monthly sessions. The divisional commissioner urged water supply officials to conduct on-site visits to gain firsthand insights into water scarcity issues and recommended automated water supply circulation.

Long-Term Planning for Water Management

Advocate Satya Mulye highlighted the district-wide concern of water scarcity and emphasized the importance of comprehensive planning. He called for proactive and strategic measures to ensure a resilient water supply system capable of withstanding future challenges. The collaborative efforts of diverse stakeholders underscored the commitment to addressing immediate shortages while laying the foundation for sustainable water management.
