Pune’s Smart City Initiative Falls Short: Synchronized Signals Fail to Curb Traffic Jams

Despite Installation of 297 Signals, Commuters Still Struggle with Gridlock on Major Roads

Pune News : Despite the implementation of synchronized signals across ten main roads in Pune as part of the Smart City project, traffic congestion remains a prevalent issue, with commuters enduring lengthy delays despite the installation of 297 signals.

Initially heralded as a solution to streamline traffic flow and reduce travel time, the synchronized signal system has failed to live up to expectations, particularly during peak hours. Daily commuters, navigating routes from AC College to Shivajinagar, Vidyapeeth, and Pune Station, continue to face significant challenges, with smooth morning movements giving way to evening bottlenecks.

The evening rush hour witnesses mounting congestion, especially along Jungli Maharaj Road and Deccan, exacerbating frustrations for drivers as they grapple with prolonged delays and stalled progress, particularly at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Putala.

The persistent gridlock has left commuters questioning the effectiveness of the synchronized signal system, as the promised relief from traffic woes remains elusive. Despite the installation of numerous signals, the anticipated improvement in travel efficiency has yet to materialize, leaving drivers longing for smoother journeys.

According to police officials, congestion persists during both morning and evening commutes, with varying signal durations along routes exacerbating delays. Challenges such as narrowed roads and ongoing construction further contribute to traffic slowdowns, resulting in extended travel times despite efforts to alleviate congestion.

As Pune continues to grapple with the enduring challenge of traffic congestion, the quest for effective solutions remains ongoing, highlighting the need for comprehensive strategies to address the city’s evolving transportation needs.
