Pune’s Pollution Battle: Residents Applaud PMC’s Rapid Response to Garbage Burning

The residents of Kalyani Nagar in Pune are expressing gratitude to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for its prompt action in addressing the issue of uncontrolled garbage burning near Golden Suites in Vadgaonsheri. This commendation comes after the second consecutive incident of indiscriminate garbage burning, raising concerns about air quality and the overall well-being of the community.

On the 9th of November 2023, around 1:20 PM, residents were confronted with the sight of burning waste near Golden Suites, a disturbing repetition of a recent episode near the Connoisseur’s Club. Disappointed by the apparent disregard for environmental norms, citizens are increasingly alarmed about the deteriorating air quality index in Pune.

Monica Sharma, a representative of Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar (TSKN), expressed her disappointment, emphasizing the urgency of action. “These activities tarnish our surroundings and pose a direct threat to our well-being. Pollution is choking our community, and our pleas for a cleaner environment seem to echo in silence. Urging authorities to take decisive measures against this environmental peril. Our collective voice seeks a Pune where the air is pure, and our concerns resonate beyond the smoke.”

Rachna Aggarwal, Chairperson of TSKN, echoed this sentiment, pledging not to take such incidents lightly due to their adverse impact on the city’s climate. She emphasized, “PMC Authorities should take stern action against the offenders. Prevention is better than cure. We will not let Pune become like Delhi.”

Dr. Sameer Kokane, a General Physician, highlighted the insidious nature of air pollution, stating, “Air pollution is an unseen thief, silently robbing us of our health, one breath at a time.”

In response to the outcry, Pradipkumar Raut, PMC Sanitization Officer, assured citizens of action taken against the offenders. “This morning, we charged the culprits a fine of Rs. 1000 for two days.”

While residents appreciate the swift response from PMC, they remain vigilant and committed to reporting incidents adversely affecting Pune. They implore the Pune Municipal Corporation to impose strict fines on responsible parties and implement measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
