Pune’s Online Rummy Obsession Takes a Dark Turn: Servant Steals Rs 38 Lakh to Fuel Addiction

Pune, August 22, 2023 – The allure of winning substantial sums of money through rummy game apps on social media platforms has taken a grim twist, leading to a distressing surge in scams and financial losses. As individuals become entrapped by the promise of quick riches, cases of cheating involving significant amounts of money have become alarmingly frequent.

In a recent incident unfolding in Pune’s Aundh area, a domestic servant succumbed to his online rummy addiction, resulting in a heart-wrenching episode of theft. The accused, identified as Manish Roy, managed to pilfer an astonishing Rs 38 lakh from his employer’s residence before being apprehended.

According to Senior Police Inspector Balaji Pandhare of Chatushrungi police station, the accused, Manish Roy, originally from West Bengal, had been employed as a domestic help in the household of Trimbakrao Patil, a resident of Aundh. Despite earning a respectable salary, Manish Roy’s fixation with online rummy games led to his financial downfall. His initial successes in the game spurred him to delve into high-stakes matches, resulting in a series of losses totaling around Rs 23 lakh.

Driven by escalating debts and desperation, Manish Roy took a grave step. Recognizing an opportunity, he orchestrated a theft within Trimbakrao Patil’s home, surreptitiously making away with 55 tolas of gold and Rs 11 lakhs in cash – a staggering total of Rs 38 lakhs. Prompt reporting by the victim facilitated swift action by the police, culminating in the apprehension of the accused, Manish Roy.

This incident underscores the darker side of online gaming addiction, revealing how the pursuit of easy wealth can lead individuals down a perilous path. The tragic consequences of such obsessions serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to online activities and financial matters.
