Pune’s Hingne Area Faces Alarming Situation: Natural Nullah Missing, Environmentalist Raises Concerns with PMC

Pune, August 24, 2023: An alarming situation has come to light in the Hingne area of Pune, where a natural Nullah has seemingly disappeared, prompting environmentalist Anant Gharat to lodge a formal complaint with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Gharat’s complaint highlights a disturbing scenario wherein a 40-feet natural Nullah that was documented in a survey conducted by the Municipal Corporation, as facilitated by a third-party organization, appears to have vanished from its physical location.

The Nullah, originating from the Taljai Panchgaon Pathari forest and flowing through the Hingne locality to eventually join the Mutha river, has become a subject of concern due to its unexplained disappearance.

According to available information, the PMC had previously conducted a comprehensive survey in collaboration with a third-party organization to assess the presence of constructions along Nullahs across the city. In this survey, the natural Nullah in question was duly recognized and documented. However, the recent revelation has left environmentalist Anant Gharat baffled as the Nullah seems to have vanished from its intended course.

In his formal complaint addressed to the municipal commissioner, Gharat has not only raised concerns about the Nullah’s disappearance but has also pointed fingers at alleged involvement of civic body officials in permitting illicit activities on the Nullah’s route.

The disappearance of the natural Nullah poses a serious environmental concern, as it is an essential component of the city’s water drainage system. The complaint has brought the issue to the attention of the PMC, urging swift and comprehensive investigation to ascertain the cause behind the Nullah’s sudden disappearance and to take appropriate actions to rectify the situation.
