Pune’s Fire Safety Boost: Five New Fire Stations and Advanced Equipment in the Pipeline

Pune, India: Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar unveiled the city’s proposed budget for the fiscal year 2024–25 on Thursday, March 7, 2024, with a substantial allocation of Rs 11,601 crore. This marked a significant increase of Rs 2086 crore from the previous year’s budget, signifying a robust commitment to the city’s development and safety.

A major highlight of Commissioner Vikram Kumar’s announcement is the establishment of five new fire stations strategically located in key areas of the city. The identified locations include Baner, Kharadi, Bavdhan, Mohammadwadi, and Dhayari, aiming to address the expanding boundaries of Pune City and incorporate previously unincorporated areas within municipal limits.

In addition to the new fire stations, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to enhance its firefighting capabilities by procuring two high-rise firefighting and rescue vehicles equipped with a 24-meter-tall ladder. The initiative also includes the recruitment of 200 new fire personnel to strengthen the workforce.

Devendra Potphode, Chief Fire Officer of PMC and PMRDA, affirmed the commitment to implementing the plan within the year. He stated, “We will purchase high-tech vehicles designed for high-rise buildings and hazardous emergencies. This decision comes in the wake of the tanker spilling incident at Yerwada. Currently, such equipment is only available in nearby cities like Mumbai, and we are planning to have our own. Over 167 people have already been recruited, and an additional 200 will join soon, aligning with the establishment of new fire stations.”

Focusing on infrastructure development for the fire department, the PMC is constructing a new administrative building in Guruwar Peth. This facility is designed to house advanced training sections, classrooms, and simulators, providing comprehensive training to firefighters and enhancing their skill sets.

Recognizing the importance of well-equipped fire services, an official from the PMC highlighted the allocation of special funds for procuring necessary equipment. The PMC has also initiated a survey to identify additional localities that could benefit from the establishment of new fire stations, emphasizing a proactive approach towards enhancing citywide safety.
