Pune’s Compassionate Dog Feeders Join PMC in Sterilization Initiatives

In a heartening display of compassion, a group of dedicated dog feeders in Pune has been collaborating with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to organize sterilization programs for stray dogs. This initiative aims not only to provide sustenance to the city’s strays but also to contribute actively to population control measures.

One resident from Aundh, who has been selflessly feeding over 70 stray dogs in Khadki, exemplifies the commitment of these dog feeders. Beyond offering daily meals, she has played a pivotal role in facilitating the sterilization of more than 200 local dogs. This effort is part of a broader movement within the city, where volunteers and animal lovers join forces to address the challenges posed by stray dog populations.

Dr. Sarika Funde, Veterinary Superintendent at PMC, acknowledges the valuable role of dog feeders in managing the stray dog population. She emphasizes the need for feeders to collaborate with PMC and participate in the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program to ensure the sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs, contributing to effective population control.

Over the past five years, Pune has witnessed a significant reduction in the number of stray dogs, decreasing by 43% from 3,15,000 in 2018 to 1,79,940 in 2023. PMC attributes this decline to the collective efforts of citizens actively involved in controlling the stray population.

However, the compassionate actions of dog feeders occasionally lead to conflicts with residents who express concerns about potential attacks, bites, or an increase in the number of dogs in their vicinity. Addressing these concerns, animal advocates stress the importance of responsible feeding, adherence to rules and regulations set by the Animal Welfare Board of India, and educating others about essential topics such as sterilization and aggression.

As Pune’s dog feeders continue their altruistic efforts, they remain a critical force in striking a balance between compassion for animals and the well-being of the community.
