Pune’s Blood Drought: Shortages Loom as Donations Dip During Diwali Break

Pune is currently grappling with a concerning shortage of blood in various blood banks across the city. The declining stock levels, barely sufficient for two to three days, are primarily attributed to a decrease in blood donations during the extended Diwali vacation, compounded by a surge in out-of-town travel.

While the blood units collected in the past met the immediate requirements, the supply has not been adequately replenished. The existing stock, which stands at a maximum of one or two days’ worth, has raised alarms among healthcare professionals.

Daily demand for blood hovers between 50 to 60 units, while the current inventory is pegged at 100 units. Unfortunately, the shortage is further exacerbated by the absence of organized blood donation camps during the extended Diwali holidays. The scarcity is particularly noticeable in blood types A, B, and AB.

The last blood donation campaign occurred on November 10, and since then, no camps have been organized due to the holiday season. Despite the consistent demand, especially for road accident victims and transplant patients, the supply has failed to keep pace. Platelet donations for dengue patients, previously on the rise in Pune, are currently at a low point, attributed to the impact of the holiday season on donation campaigns.

With both red blood cells and platelets in high demand, campaign organizers are struggling to gather donors, reaching out to colleges and IT companies, only to find them sparsely staffed due to the extended break. Urgent appeals are now being made to residents, urging them to step forward and contribute to blood donation efforts.
