Pune’s Beer Boom: Breaking the Mold with Rising Sales Amidst Statewide Decline

In a surprising turn of events, Pune emerges as the exception in the recent statewide dip in beer sales, showcasing a substantial increase in beer consumption. According to data from the State Excise Department, between April and October 2023, Pune contributed significantly to the total beer sales in the state, reporting a consumption of 3.45 crore liters during this period.

In comparison to major cities like Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Nashik, Pune takes the lead in beer sales, defying the overall declining trend. The State Excise Department, responsible for the lion’s share of revenue collection in the state treasury, attributes Pune’s robust beer sales to the unique preferences of its residents.

Pune’s affinity for beer becomes even more pronounced when considering the state government’s formation of a committee in October to probe the reasons behind the declining beer sales. Chaired by the Chief Secretary of the State Excise Department and comprising five members, the committee aims to analyze various factors influencing beer consumption.

One notable factor under scrutiny is the impact of increased excise duty on beer prices. The committee is investigating whether the rise in excise duty on beer, in comparison to other alcoholic beverages, has disproportionately affected beer enthusiasts, contributing to a potential deterrent in sales.

While Pune shines as a beacon of thriving beer culture, other districts such as Nagpur, Amravati, Nanded, Kolhapur, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Nagar have reported diminished beer sales. The State Excise Department, cognizant of these disparities, is actively working on a comprehensive plan to streamline beer sales across the state.

As per the latest data, Pune’s beer sales from April to October this year have outshone the corresponding period in the previous year. In the preceding fiscal year, the city recorded beer sales of 3.13 crore liters during the same timeframe. However, in the current fiscal year, Pune has surpassed this figure, reaching 3.45 crore liters, marking a significant growth of 10 percent compared to the previous year’s 3.1547 crore liters during the same period.
