Pune: Youth Conference on Climate Change! Students Empowered to Tackle Environmental Challenges

Pune: In a collaborative effort led by the Association for Leadership, Education, Research, and Training (ALERT), along with Vanarai Trust and Srishti Sanstha, a youth conference is set to unfold on Saturday, January 27, in Pune. The focus of the conference is centred around the theme of ‘Climate Change and its Effects,’ engaging school students in enlightening discussions.

Participants will showcase insights gained from various activities conducted on major environmental factors such as air quality, energy consumption, water resources, and the impact of urbanisation. Advocate Vandana Chavan, Member of Parliament, highlighted in a press conference today that the students’ creative manifesto, derived from the comprehensive study on these subjects, will be presented to both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

Chavan further emphasised the Pune Climate Warrior project’s significant role in fostering awareness about climate change across more than 80 schools in the city. She informed that innovative initiatives, including essay writing, elocution competitions, and filmmaking, have been organised in the city to sensitise students to the challenges posed by air and water pollution, excessive electricity consumption, and the ramifications of urbanisation.

The activities will culminate in a youth summit at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium on Ghole Road, Shivajinagar, at 9.30 a.m. on January 27. Dignitaries such as Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kumar, Pimpri Chinchwad Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and Paani Foundation CEO Satyajit Bhatkal will grace the occasion as chief guests, providing valuable guidance to the participating students.

Chavan acknowledged the proactive role played by the students, stating that their in-depth reports and films on environmental issues reflect a heightened consciousness among the upcoming generation. Several of these films will be presented during the summit, shedding light on the pivotal role children can play in environmental protection.
