Pune Witnesses Dramatic Drop in Garlic Prices as New Season Takes Root

Pune experiences a noteworthy transformation in garlic prices as the new season commences, leading to a substantial reduction in costs. Known for its premium pricing, garlic, which recently peaked at Rs 400 per kg, is now available at significantly lower prices, ranging from Rs 200 to 250 per kg in the retail sector.

New Season, New Prices: A mere fortnight ago, consumers were grappling with the soaring prices of garlic, reaching an unprecedented Rs 400 per kg. However, with the initiation of the new season and an influx of 20 to 30 tons of garlic daily from Madhya Pradesh, prices have experienced a sharp decline.

Contrastingly, the current retail prices offer relief to consumers, dropping by up to Rs 100 per kilo. The market dynamic is evolving as Maharashtra witnesses a decline in Gavran garlic cultivation, leading to increased demand for imported garlic from primary cultivators such as Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

Market Insights and Future Trends: A spokesperson from a Pune market yard highlighted the commencement of the new garlic season and the consistent surge in garlic arrivals from Madhya Pradesh. As other states initiate their garlic seasons following the cold weather, the market anticipates a substantial inflow of garlic over the next few months, further contributing to the declining prices.

Key Market Prices: (Approximate Prices)

  • Wholesale Market: Rs 1000 to Rs 1600 per 10 kg
  • Retail Market: Rs 200 to Rs 250 per kg
