The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune, forecasting light to isolated moderate rainfall from June 28 to July 1, 2024.
Recent Weather Patterns
Pune has witnessed varying rainfall patterns over the past weeks. After initial intense rainfall from June 1-8, there was a notable decrease attributed to a weakening monsoon branch in the Arabian Sea. However, the monsoon regained momentum around June 21, leading to sporadic showers across the region.
Alert Status and Forecast
Following an orange alert earlier in the week that saw limited precipitation, the ghat areas around Pune have experienced increased rainfall in the last 48 hours. Despite this, overall rainfall since mid-June has been moderate.
The IMD’s yellow alert covers Pune, along with other districts in Konkan, Central Maharashtra, and Vidarbha. This alert indicates the likelihood of light to moderate rains in isolated areas, supported by a low-pressure system over South Maharashtra and northern Kerala.
Impact on Agricultural Activities
The revival of monsoon showers is crucial for farmers, particularly those preparing for the annual Pandharpur Palkhi procession. This traditional event, expected to reach Pune on June 30, gathers many participants from farming communities who typically conclude their sowing activities after the first monsoon showers.
Meteorological Insights
According to a senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, the active monsoon conditions over Maharashtra are influenced by the prevailing low-pressure system. This system is responsible for the current weather dynamics, including the forecasted light to moderate rains across the identified districts.
