IMD Warns of Prolonged Heatwave Conditions in Pune, Urges Precautionary Measures
As Pune braces for scorching temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating that maximum temperatures in the region will continue to soar above 40 degrees Celsius (°C) until April 6. With clear skies and strong solar radiation expected to prevail over Maharashtra, residents are advised to take precautions against the ongoing heatwave conditions.
According to senior meteorological officials, both the Shivajinagar and Lohegaon observatories have recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C, with Lohegaon expected to maintain a high of around 41°C in the coming days. The unrelenting heatwave has prompted concerns among authorities, particularly regarding its impact on public health and safety.
While certain areas in Pune, including Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and sections of Kothrud, received minimal rainfall in the morning, IMD authorities attribute this to the intrusion of moisture caused by a trough line stretching from north Tamil Nadu to Chhattisgarh through Karnataka and Vidarbha. Despite sporadic rainfall, the overall influence of the trough line is anticipated to diminish, leading to cloudless conditions across all meteorological observatories.
As a result, IMD warns of a gradual rise in daytime temperatures across Pune and surrounding regions. Additionally, higher nighttime temperatures are forecasted for Madhya Maharashtra until April 3. Shivajinagar and Lohegaon have consistently reported daytime temperatures exceeding normal levels by 2-3°C, accompanied by nighttime temperatures surpassing the usual range by 4-5°C.
As the heatwave persists, residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek shelter in well-ventilated spaces. Authorities advise vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children, to take extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
