PUNE: An investigation has revealed that many inmates of the Yerawada Central Jail have been undergoing treatment since one, four or nine months in the ward meant for jail inmates, at the Sassoon General Hospital. Anil Bhosle, who is in the Yerawada jail for committing financial fraud and gangster Rupesh Marne are some of the occupants of ward number 16.
The prisoners use various coercive methods to get shifted to the Sassoon Hospital for seeking medical treatment. Despite the presence of some prisoners who are suffering from various ailments, some ‘select’ prisoners are admitted to the Sassoon Hospital. For this, prison doctors, police, doctors at Sassoon Hospital, and hospital employees are bribed. Prisoners who are seriously ill, are taken to OPD for treatment. However, some ‘special’ prisoners are given VIP treatment.
Prisoners get admitted to the hospital by pretending to be sick. Even if it is a minor ailment, they remain in the hospital for months with the help provided by police and doctors. A question arises about the role of jail and Sassoon Hospital administrations.
