Pune University Employee Suspended for Allegedly Taking Money for Marksheet

An incident of alleged corruption has come to light at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), resulting in the suspension of a senior assistant from the Examination Department. The employee, identified as Dr. Sanjay Sampatrao Nevse, is accused of demanding money from a student in exchange for providing his marksheet. The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the university’s processes and the need for transparency.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 26 when a student named Pratham Bhandari visited the Examination Department to collect his marksheet for his third year of BA. According to reports, Nevse demanded a sum of Rs 4,000 from Pratham in order to release his marksheet. The student complied and paid the requested amount.

The following day, Pratham returned to the department accompanied by his father. This time, Nevse handed over the marksheet to the student after receiving Rs 3,000. However, the incident took an unexpected turn when activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) who were present in the department caught Nevse in the act and exposed the alleged misconduct. A video capturing the incident was shared on social media, triggering public outrage.

In response to the incident, the SPPU administration took swift action. On August 29, an official order was issued by SPPU Registrar Dr. Praful Pawar, announcing Nevse’s suspension from service with immediate effect. The order stated that Nevse’s conduct amounted to misappropriation for financial gains and was unbecoming of an employee of the university. The suspension order also outlined that Nevse would be given the opportunity to present his side of the story before a disciplinary committee, which would then determine the appropriate course of action moving forward.

This incident has not only highlighted issues of corruption and unethical behavior but has also brought into focus the importance of transparency and accountability within educational institutions. It has prompted discussions about how universities can ensure the integrity of their processes, especially in critical areas such as issuing academic documents. The incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that educational institutions have toward their students and the broader community, emphasizing the need for adherence to ethical standards and principles.
